COMMUNICATION AND CIVIL SOCIETY: INTERFACES AND AGENDAS | Author : RICARDO FABRINO MENDONÇA | Abstract | Full Text | Abstract : This paper aims to map different dimensions of the interface between communication and civil society. Firstly, it discusses different definitions of the concept of civil society. Then, it presents four thematic non-excluding axis that have gathered inquiries in this area: 1) visibility and social movements; 2) collective identities and social mobilization; 3) democratization of communication; and 4) democratic deliberation and civil society. Lastly, the paper suggests that studies about this interface have been neglecting two aspects of recent discussions on the concept of civil society: its fluid frontiers and its anticivil dimensions. |

| BEHAVIOR AND POLITICAL VALUES OF VOTERS | Author : LUCIANA VEIGA | Abstract | Full Text | Abstract : Scholars (see Dalton, 2002) have pointed to the growth of two types of voters in recent decades: the nonpartisan voter, cognitively sophisticated and mobilized over the issue of politics; and the partisan voter, who do not possesses a lot of cognitive resources and information on political affairs. These profiles contradict the descriptions of partisan and non-partisan voters of the sixties (Campbell, 1960). Thus we seek to apply the typology inspired by Dalton (2008), which classifies the voters according to two variables: party preference and cognitive sophistication on matters of policy. From analysis of surveys of the Brazilian Electoral Study, conducted in 2002 and 2006, this paper intents to ascertain whether the four types of voters differ in procedures of choice and in values involved in the making of their choices (ideological identification and party preference, degree of satisfaction with governments and evaluation of the image of politicians). The results show that there are some similarities regarding the procedures of choice: all the interviewed said that, in order to formulate their decision, they prioritize, firstly, issues and proposals; secondly, the past and the image of politicians; and, finally, the candidate’s party. There are many differences on the evaluation of government and mainly on the evaluation of the image of candidate Lula. |
| PRESIDENT DILMA, WITH WHAT CLOTHES DO I GO? | Author : ADOLPHO QUEIROZ, FRANCISCO RAMIREZ MARTINS JR | Abstract | Full Text | Abstract : This article aims to show how the theme of “fashion” has gained ground in editorial policy that covered the presidential elections in Brazil in 2010. The fact that we have a woman candidate increased the area of interest of print online, valued photographers and fashion designers who were also important during the campaign, to the extent that the candidate look is changing. Here some impressions on the subject. |

| CONVERGENCE AS CONDITIONANT FOR MEDIA REGULATION | Author : OTHON JAMBEIRO, FÁBIO FERREIRA, CHALINI BARROS | Abstract | Full Text | Abstract : Convergence comprises a combination of interlinked and interdependent transformations, of technological, industrial, commercial, cultural and social nature, which affect communication regulation. Customers, at their time, turned also convergent, involved in an intense participative culture, which is too, from the point of view of its social and geographical range, thanks to convergence, more and more extense. Instead of passive consumers of media and information and communication services, we have now active and socially connected consumers, no more readers/spectators/listeners, but noisy activists and publishers. To understand this phenomenon is essential to discern a regulatory frame suitable for it. |
